Acer
Academy Partners’ Night 2016—One
of the local technology giants, Acer Philippines Inc. was in Cebu last December
12, Monday, to give Cebuanos a great privilege to be “Kong-nected”. It was a part of their goal under the Acer Academy—to
meet its partners in the program. Acer gathered its exclusive partners for a
fresh session along with new updates on the newest state-of-the-art Acer products
and other developments from its global partner, Microsoft (the software king).
The main highlight of the said event was the talk of Acer’s campaign ambassador/ newspaper columnist/ author/ award-winning business consultant/ top inspirational and motivational speaker—Mr. Francis Kong himself. With the theme, “Are you Kong-nected?”, Mr. Kong emphasized on how technology changed the world in terms of connection and communication. He stressed on change as something inevitable and constant. How the world progressed from snail mails to emails, from typewriters to computers, from black and white televisions to huge flatscreen HD colored ones—simply put, how technology made humanity’s world more efficient and easy (one word: better).
There was also a comparison of the then and the now generation, as he labelled the millennials “the generation of firsts”, which basically means that we are the first ones who are able to get any information without the help of adults (just our fingertips can suffice, if you know what I mean). He talked about how the generation today can easily express thoughts, feelings, and emotions through the social media platform—facebook, twitter, instagram and the like, of course with the use of gadgets as cellphones, laptops, tablets etc. How the world became smaller that it’s just literally at the tip of our fingers. This was how technology brought huge waves of changes in the society, which he highlighted. Furthermore, he quoted, “technology is not a threat to business; rather, technology changes the consumers’ behaviors—and that is the threat”. This nugget of wisdom made the audience, including me, ponder upon it. Technology itself is not bane, it is in how people adapt to it that makes it into a possible disadvantage. He later provided another thought-provoking quote, “change is scary but it is scarier not to change”. That saying made the listeners think intently. Change is indeed daunting for there is a fear of the unknown, yet it is more petrifying if you, as a person, will not accept change. A part of the twenty-first century change comes technology and all its wonders. If you are a close minded individual, you will never get to fully enjoy the benefits of what technology can bring. So, Mr. Kong invited the audience to be open to all the possibilities that technology can give you, including its pros and cons. In that essence, he underscored the importance of discipline while doing so. It is in being disciplined that one can be so close to success, that he believed. He continued the talk as he presented several types of discipline and how to develop it. His speech was very engaging as he never failed to include the audience whenever he had the chance. Later, he ended his presentation with a warm Christmas reminder on humility, as Jesus himself humbled his way in coming to the world. Indeed, his entire talk was very inspiring and there were too much wisdom in just a few minutes.
After Mr. Kong’s highly motivational
talk, a leader from Microsoft Philippines, Mr. Eufer Pasion, owned the stage.
As Acer’s partner, he was proud to share their significant contributions to the
lives of the academic community. “Education is always changing”, that he believed,
so as a society, he encouraged that we must also adapt to certain changes in
order to address the needs and demands of the fast-paced, ever dynamic world.
In connection with this, he accentuated the fact that there is a dire need for
technology as it is the key of the changes that we are currently facing.
The program proceeded with the
presentation on Acer’s newest models and designed gadgets, led by Mr. Anjelo
Paguntanan, one of Acer’s leaders. There was a glaring focus on education, as
the partners present are from different schools in the Visayas and Mindanao.
Acer practically designed softwares in order to enhance the educational
experience, these are as follows: Acer Classroom Manager and Acer
CloudProfessor. Both were undeniably stunning with its features very suitable
and highly engaging for the classroom setting. These were designed for the
teachers’ and students’ ease and compatibility. In support to this, the Dean
from IT and Communication of West Visayas State University (Acer’s school
partner), Dr. Joel de Castro shared his thoughts on the best practices of their
institution and how Acer was a big help on their end.
The gathering went on as Acer
acknowledged its newest partners and Platinum members of the Acer Academy
program in Cebu. These Acer Academy 2016 awardees are University of Cebu –
Banilad Campus, Cebu Technological University, University of San Jose –
Recoletos, Leyte Normal University, ACT International Educational Foundation,
and Negros Oriental State University.
The entire event was formally ended
by Acer’s Business Product Lead, Ms. Lercy Cuenca, as she quoted “We (at
Acer) don’t want to be just your
supplier, we want to be your partner”. With this belief, they came up with
the Acer Academy with the intent to reach out to schools and bridge gaps and
digital divides. Indeed, the said event was more than a success as the audience
was all grateful for the wonderful once-in-a lifetime experience of having Mr.
Kong as a speaker without spending a single cent. Yes, it was all for free. We
were thankful to Acer and its team for making an event as generous and fruitful
as it was. There was too much learning and experiencing all in a day! To more
success and glorious years to Acer, kudos!
